Kanwen Ma has been researching the history of Chinese medicine for 50 years.
Before coming to England he was a professor at the China Academy of Traditional
Chinese Medicine. He has over one hundred papers published in English and Chinese
and has worked on a number of collaborative projects compiling dictionaries of
Chinese medicine. In his early years of research Professor Ma was a pioneer of
field work in the history of Chinese medicine. Visiting the hometowns and villages
of famous figures in the history of Chinese medicine, such as Sun Simiao and Tao
Hongjing, he collected evidence from temples, stone steles and in family genealogies.
His current research is on the contribution of women to Chinese medicine. He is also
involved in a collaborative project aiming to standardise translations of
Chinese medical terminology.
